Nokia is allegedly set to launch a new Symbian-based device, the C5, according to a Daily Mobile report. If the details are correct, the device will serve as Nokia’s first Cseries smartphone. The new category appears to offer mid-range smartphone features compared to the company’s high-end Nseries handsets and Eseries business offerings.

According to the source of the leaked images, the C5 will offer a 3.2-megapixel camera, 2.2-inch QVGA display, GPS, and an FM radio. Internal memory is said to reach just 50MB, although a microSD slot is also integrated for further expansion. The operating system is claimed to be the Symbian S60v3 FP2 release.

Pricing information for the C5 remains unknown. The device is expected to be unveiled next month at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

Microsoft today confirmed that the Windows Mobile 6.5.3 release launching first with the Sony Ericsson Aspen greatly improves the platform’s support for touchscreens. In addition to making buttons more touch-friendly, it adds support for capacitive touch of the sort seen in Android and the iPhone, making it much more responsive. Hooks have also been put in place for multi-touch, though this would still need phone builders to have an actual solution.

Most of the other changes center almost exclusively around touch and include a more consistent touch UI throughout the whole OS, such as the absence of tabs in many areas. Legacy apps even have a magnifier to reach buttons that were designed for a stylus, Microsoft says. Internet Explorer has been given smoother transitions in touch gestures as well as an overall speedup.

The improvements almost uniformly confirm the suspected nature of 6.5.3, which is to better position Windows Mobile as a competitor to hardware from Apple and Google’s partners until the launch of Windows Phone 7 by end of the year.

The aging Microsoft OS has only supported imprecise resistive touch and in many cases has required a stylus in most areas. Only one Windows Mobile phone currently supports capacitive touch, the HTC HD2, and does so through extensive changes to the user interface and drivers that render Windows Mobile almost unrecognizable.

Tired of waiting for the Xperia X10 for your first taste of Android and Sony Ericsson? Leave it to the gang at the XDA-developers forum to jump the gun. Last week marked the successful port of Android 2.0.1 (or Android 1.6, if you so choose) to the Xperia X1. No bluetooth, camera, or GPS — not yet, at any rate — but WiFI, GSM, resistive touchscreen, and all the other amenities should be functioning.

While just recently made official, there have been plenty of Motorola Devour leaks over the years (er, months) to keep us occupied. This latest one has the aluminum colored phone sized up in bokeh-filled and yet surprisingly small, compressed and grainy shots — as if Mr. Blurrycam is holding up a nice, low aperture DSLR lens to his RAZR’s sensor. Oh well, it’s the thought that counts. What’s particularly helpful here is this comparison shot with the Nexus One, which shows the Devour to be a good bit larger, despite its significantly smaller screen size.

Research In Motion is planning to use its WebKit-based BlackBerry browser as a surprise weapon against Android phones and the iPhone, Kaufman Bros. analyst Shaw Wu said today in an investor note. He cites “sources” who say the browser has been delayed but that it will take advantage of the push nature of BlackBerry Internet Service to load sites much more quickly. It could load pages as much as 30 to 60 percent faster than other WebKit devices simply by not having to use as much bandwidth.

Wu also believes the browser will soon integrate Flash. RIM joined the Open Screen Project in October but didn’t say at the time it would add the plugin to its browser. The completed software doesn’t have a definite unveiling point but may get a demo anywhere between Mobile World Congress in the middle of this month and RIM’s self-run Wireless Enterprise Symposium at the end of April.

Hardware is similarly being worked upon as two new touchscreen BlackBerries are still thought to be in progress. A conventional BlackBerry shape with a touchscreen, nicknamed elsewhere as the Dakota, is still in development. A full-touchscreen slider resembling the Storm2 is also due but hasn’t received new details. Both phones are unofficially slated to ship in 2010.

We’ve finally found ourselves a solid, confirmed shot of a micro SIM in the wild, thanks to an FCC filing from Lok8u — the company that just inked a deal with T-Mobile — that shows the innards of its GPS watch torn asunder. Over on the right there is one of the micro SIMs in question, and as you can clearly make out, the contact pad is identical to the one you’d find on a traditional SIM (that shot of an AT&T unit that we’d posted earlier was actually a mockup by our own Sean Cooper, you see).
