Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc. has unveiled its fourth quarter 2011 earnings together with its entire financial results for the year, reporting revenue of quarter totaled $3.4 billion although a net loss of $80 million or $0.27 per share, reversing net earnings of $80 million, or $0.27 per share, in the same period of 2010.
Earlier this month, the Libertyville-based company had warned that it expects the fourth-quarter sales revenues to be little changed from comparative periods as Motorola struggles against strong rivalry in the smartphone market.
Motorola’s results showed that charges, as well as costs allied to its intended acquisition by Google in the bottom line. When those costs are expelled, Motorola’s net earnings for the fourth quarter were $61 million, or $0.20 per share, compared with $108 million, or $0.37 per share, in the year-earlier period.
Excluding charges, for 2011 Motorola’s net profit was $0.33 per share, reversing a loss of $0.28 per share in the earlier year. The entire year revenues totaled $13.1 billion, which is a 14 percent increase from 2010.
Finally, for this past quarter mobile phone and tablet shipments were unhappy for Motorola that shipped out 10.5 million mobile devices, decreased from the 11.3 million sales the year before. In 2011, out of the 42.4 million devices shipped merely 18.7 million were smartphones whereas 1 million were tablets. Nevertheless, in the quarter four only 200,000 tablets were shipped in spite of the holiday season and the release of the Xoom 2.
Google, the search giant is yet in the process of acquiring Motorola Mobility, separate from Motorola for $12.5 billion. The merger contract is projected to close early this year and for this reason Motorola has not revealed guidance for the next quarter.
