Google Chairman Eric Schmidt has stated that the company’s Google TV platform will be embedded on the majority of televisions in stores by next summer. The Internet giant has recently re-launched Google TV with a major software update that fetches more apps to the platform.
At the LeWeb conference, Google TV wasn’t the only product that Schmidt issued predictions; on Wednesday the executive stated that developers will favor Android over iOS within 6 months time.
The Search Giant faces numerous obstacles on the way to a majority share of the connected TV market. Google’s original launch partners struggled to move surplus inventory in 2010 after Google TV was panned by critics. Sony had to cut prices on its own Google TV offerings after unsatisfactory sales.
After last year’s struggles, the internet giant might have a tough time in convincing HDTV makers to adopt the Android-based platform, in particular from the time when a number of vendors have developed their own competing “smart TV” platforms.
Earlier this year, South Korea’s Samsung announced a “digital hub” strategy that centers on cloud-based televisions. Sony and Panasonic have as well designed their own interfaces for their sets.
On the other hand, recent reports have recommended that Apple will release the rumored television set in late 2012. And this week, Japanese sources claimed that a “major Japanese company” is involved in manufacturing the set, and is alleged to have 3 screen sizes ranging from 32 inches to 55 inches.
All this indicates that Google TV will be having a strong competition from Apple; if at all the Cupertino Giant launches its TV.
